Flåm Railway Guide
Flåm Railway: A Scenic Journey Through the Heart of Norway Guide
Embark on an unforgettable adventure aboard the Flåm Railway, one of the steepest railway lines in the world. This breathtaking train journey takes you through the stunning landscapes of Western Norway, from the high mountains down to the picturesque village of Flåm nestled at the innermost point of the Aurlandsfjord. Prepare to be mesmerized by cascading waterfalls, verdant valleys, and towering peaks as you descend (or ascend!) through this natural wonderland. The Flåm Railway's history is rooted in the need to connect the remote Flåm valley to the Bergen Line, the main railway line between Oslo and Bergen. Construction began in 1924 and was a monumental feat of engineering, involving the excavation of 20 tunnels and the use of innovative techniques to overcome the challenging terrain. The railway officially opened in 1940 and quickly became a popular tourist attraction, showcasing the raw beauty of the Norwegian landscape. A ride on the Flåm Railway is more than just transportation; it's an experience. The train makes a photo stop at the impressive Kjosfossen waterfall, where you can disembark and witness the power of nature up close. You can also hike or bike in the Flåm valley, explore the charming village, or take a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The Flåm Railway Museum provides further insight into the railway's history and construction.
